Make sure it checks out before you checkout

Homework isn’t only for school. Be sure to exercise due diligence before you confirm any payments online. Here are some ways you can avoid being an unwilling participant in an online purchase scam.

If you’re dealing with a seller on an online marketplace, find out how the website deals with payment issues and solves disputes. Some platforms will only release your payment to the seller after you receive the item.

  • Take a look at the seller’s reviews and keep an eye out for any red flags. Keep in mind, though, that reviews can be faked so don’t rely solely on this.

  • Verify the legitimacy of the seller. Make sure their address, phone number or any other information stated online checks out before confirming your payment.

  • For person-to-person platforms such as Carousell, always insist on making payment after collecting your items or use CarouPay to ensure that payment is released only the collection of items.

  • If all else fails, don’t buy the item. As the saying goes, there are plenty of fish in the sea.
